WINTER BACKPACKING IN SOUTHERN UTAH
Páramo ambassador Sam Stone recently tested the Velez Jacket during a two-week through-hike of the backcountry of the Zion and Bryce Canyon Wilderness, alongside the Dixie National Forest Winter. The weather in southern Utah is a study in contrasts. The blinding white of fresh snow against the deep, ancient red of the canyon walls creates a landscape that is, quite simply, breathtaking. It was under these beautiful yet challenging conditions that Sam put the Velez Jacket to the test.

The Challenge of the Backcountry
Backpacking in wintery environments often involves a constant battle with your own sweat. “Generally, traditional outer layers lack breathability,” Sam noted. “One constantly has to battle their own sweat and layer systems to mitigate getting cold.”
For Sam, the Páramo Velez jacket provided an optimal solution whenever the rain, snow, or wind moved in. Because Páramo’s unique, PFAS free outdoor apparel utilizes the Nikwax Analogy system to mimic nature, it doesn’t just block the rain, it moves liquid water away from your body.
“The ability to hike with significant weight while the jacket manages both exterior moisture and sweat proves unparalleled,” Sam said. “The Páramo kit effectively wicks moisture from the body and subsequently keeps me dry while protecting me from the elements.”
Performance in Every Condition
At Páramo, we believe in a different measure of performance. It’s not just about the miles logged, but about the peace of mind that comes from wearing sustainable outdoor apparel. Sam’s Páramo Velez jacket isn’t just a piece of gear; it’s a commitment to innovative, sustainable outdoor clothing that is ethically manufactured and designed to last.
When we asked Sam about his favorite features of his Páramo rain jacket, he pointed directly to the innovative ventilation:
“The pit zips and pocket vents are fantastic. Traditional pit zips are very cumbersome to use when wearing a pack. I really enjoy that Páramo has placed the zips on the upper arm. Just as effective as a pit zip, but significantly more accessible mid-trail. I also love the pocket vents. Dumping heat has never been so easy.”

Why it Matters
Whether you are exploring serene slot canyons lined with petroglyphs or navigating a snowstorm, you deserve a comfortable, eco-friendly waterproof jacket that keeps you “bone dry.” Choosing Páramo clothing means investing in waterproof clothing that protects both you and the planet.
As Sam puts it: “It’s truly the most comfortable outerwear on the market.”
