PÁRAMO & GREEN FRIDAY – CARE, REPAIR, REUSE, RECYCLE

Páramo is a responsible business that has always been about ‘taking action’. We want to have a tangible impact on people and the planet, and our products and values speak for that. What better day, then, to remind people of our commitment to circularity than Green Friday, the sustainable alternative to Black Friday that encourages people to shop sustainably, care better for what they have, and to be mindful of the environment…

Did you know the textile industry generates an eye-watering 92 million tonnes of waste annually, and the equivalent to a rubbish truck full of clothes ends up in global landfill sites every second? * Páramo clothing has always been engineered not to become obsolete: our designs are classic and timeless, our fabric systems are extremely durable, and we have championed the care, repair, reuse and recycling of our gear since our foundation in 1992 – long before Green Friday became a global event.

CARE

Unsurprisingly, most people don’t clean or proof their outdoor gear as regularly as they should, even though it is paramount for its performance and longevity (dirt, dust, sweat, oils from animals, sunscreen and makeup all build up to prevent gear from working properly. Plus, over time, durable water repellent coatings become less effective).

PFAS-free Nikwax aftercare products ensure that Páramo clothing remains clean and waterproof from one outdoor adventure to the next, without you having to rely on harmful chemicals – or delicate membranes – to stay warm, dry and comfortable.

REPAIR

Páramo gear has always been repairable, and we have provided our own repair service from our Wadhurst HQ since 1999, giving a new lease of life to favourite jackets, trousers, fleeces and more, saving them from landfill. From patching to zip replacements to arm and leg modifications, our expert workshop has repaired almost 25,000 garments over the years!

Every single piece of clothing that passes through our workshop undergoes a thorough quality assessment before it is returned to you, meaning you can put that lost battle with a barbed wire fence well and truly behind you.

REUSE

If your Páramo garment has reached the end of its useable life with you, yet still has years of adventures left in it, we will pass it on to an appreciative new owner via our Recycling Scheme. Returning your old gear to us is very easy, and we’ll reward you for your efforts with a generous discount on new Páramo products. These garments then make their way into our Re-store Adventure shop, which offers other Páramo people access to alternate styles, sizes and colours at prices that don’t cost the earth. Every piece of outdoor clothing in the store has been individually assessed, cleaned and reproofed to meet our performance standards for many more years to come.

Thousands of our pre-loved garments are still living their best lives on the hills and mountains, tracks and trails.

RECYCLE

The mono-materials we use avoid the need for membranes, taped seams, and glues, which makes our gear uniquely suited to recycling.

If an item is well and truly beyond economic repair, it is stripped of any useful components and baled up for shipping to our specialist facility that preserves the value and quality of its polyester. This process ensures the material doesn’t enter a spiral of “downcycling” that eventually ends up in landfill, and old gear will become high quality fabric rather than cheap and disposable cushion filling.

Did you know that Páramo has integrated chemically recycled yarns into two brand new 360° jackets?  Using Pump Liner® made from recycled Páramo garments and waste from the textile industry, we are showcasing the feasibility of a closed-loop supply chain.

This Green Friday, we are encouraging you to care for, repair and reuse or recycle outdoor gear! We depend on our planet and its ecosystems, and as an outdoor company it is our responsibility to help protect and preserve the natural world for future generations to enjoy.
