SPRING

Wild Arena’s recommendation:

Wild Scottish North Coast Walks The better weather prospects and longer daylight hours of spring provide the perfect opportunity for a wild coastline hike. The far north coast of Scotland is a mosaic of rugged cliffs and undiscovered coves, and we love setting out to explore new locations. There is something truly special about capturing an image of a scene that feels unseen by others – a hidden corner of nature that becomes your own discovery. With vibrant wildflowers blooming and the dynamic interplay of sea and sky, spring adventures along the Scottish coastline are both exhilarating and inspiring.

Land & Wave’s recommendation:

Wild Swimming at Chapman’s Pool We love a springtime trundle down to the glorious bay at Chapman’s Pool in Dorset. Flanked by dilapidated fisherman huts to the left, and a breathtaking cliff ascent to the right, this horseshoe shaped bay is a wonderful place to hike and swim. The shoreline is strewn with ammonite fossils and sea glass treasures and the sea is usually sheltered enough for a refreshing dip. Make a day of it and extend the walk to include a visit to St Aldhelm’s Chapel, taking in spectacular views of the jagged Jurassic Coastline to the west.

SUMMER

Wild Arena’s recommendation:

Stromness Street We absolutely love the idea of exploring the world with our cameras – the notion that around every corner lies something interesting to capture. The things that inspire us can be seemingly small: complementary colours, a configuration of interesting shapes, or a person going about their daily life. A summer’s day trip to an Orkney Island harbour village, such as Stromness, embodies this spirit of discovery. The charm of narrow, winding streets, vibrant facades, and the rhythm of everyday life provide endless opportunities to experiment creatively.

Land & Wave’s recommendation:

Hiking and Coasteering along the South West Coastal Path Nothing beats a summer hike, with the lure of jumping in the sea to cool off at the end. Start the morning by zipping up your wetsuit and heading off with the Land & Wave instructors down to Dancing Ledge. Here you’ll experience the coastline from a new perspective – the sea! Then swim, scramble and jump your way along the Jurassic Coast. In the afternoon, hike 40 minutes along the Priest’s Way trail and treat yourself to a well-earned pint and a pie at the Square and Compass pub – nothing beats it.

AUTUMN

Wild Arena’s recommendation:

Red Deer in the Mist Autumn is an extraordinary time for photography, partly because of the spectacular colours in the landscape but also because of the light. Light makes pictures, and if you are lucky, it can transform the scene in front of your camera into something magical. One such unforgettable moment happened on a day that started without much promise. Late in the afternoon, we found our wonderful local red deer, and then it all came together. The setting sun broke through, mist began to drift in, and the scene became pure magic. Moments like this capture the essence of autumn photography — unpredictable, breathtaking, and truly rewarding.

Land & Wave’s recommendation:

Rock Climbing on the Jurassic Coast With autumn sunshine on your back and waves crashing down below, Dorset provides a host of excellent beginner-friendly outdoor climbs. Our go-to spots include Hedbury Quarry and Dancing Ledge near Swanage or The Cuttings and The Battleship in Portland. A day can easily be spent pottering around the crags – just assemble your crew, pack a legendary picnic and enjoy the view.

WINTER

Wild Arena’s recommendation:

The Stillness of the Winter Mountains The hills and mountains of the Highlands have always drawn visitors with their awe-inspiring scale and wild tranquillity. With hard winter weather comes a stillness and extreme quiet that can be an extraordinary experience. We’re fortunate to have access to some of the most remote parts of the UK, where the vast landscapes are blanketed in snow and ice. Shooting pictures in these serene environments is as much about being present in the moment as it is about capturing the memory. Whether it’s the crisp crunch of snow underfoot or the play of light on icy peaks, winter adventures in the Highlands offer a profound sense of connection to nature and your creative spirit.

Land & Wave’s recommendation:

Bushcraft Skills in ancient Dorset woodland Warm up in winter beside a roaring campfire in ancient woodland – the crackle of flames against the cold, still air is hypnotic. We love a cook-up of locally sourced venison seared with freshly picked thyme, and campfire donuts are also a huge hit with the kids. It’s great fun to make a shelter, get cosy and soak up the atmosphere. We’re lucky enough to use woodland which has gorgeous views of the Corfe Castle Ruins in the background.
