PFAS are a family of chemicals with water and oil repellent properties that are frequently applied to outdoor clothing as well as being widely used in other industries. However, many of them are toxic and persistent in the environment. This means that they cannot be broken down by natural processes and are bio-accumulative, meaning they build up in the bodies of people, animals and other living things.
We have never added any type of per or polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) to our Páramo waterproofs for water repellency. In 2014, with irrefutable evidence of their harmful, hazardous and polluting nature, we went even further by introducing a fabric testing protocol guaranteeing their full exclusion from our products and processes. The test we use is called Combustion Ion Chromatography, a technique that combines high-temperature combustion with ion chromatography to determine if any fluorinated substances are present in the fabric.
NET ZERO
Páramo is absolutely committed to becoming Net Zero by 2040. Between now and then, we will reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 90% and offset the remaining 10% by purchasing carbon credits from our longstanding conservation partner, the World Land Trust.
We achieved a 30% reduction in our Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions an impressive 18 months ahead of schedule, and through ongoing initiatives including decarbonising our products, investing in research and developing alternative technologies, we have 2040 firmly in our sights.
We have distilled our Net Zero ambition into a simple, visual roadmap that tracks our journey to 2040. We have a mountain to climb between now and then, but we are confident we will reach its peak in time. View roadmap.

We have always been about taking action and now we are taking the next step: We have developed the Páramo Sustainability Strategy 2025. The strategy comprises more than 20 projects with clear and specific goals to achieve by 2025. It links in with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and focuses on 7 key areas to protect people and planet:
CONSERVATION
We are passionate about supporting the growth of the World Land Trust and the European Outdoor Conservation Association to help protect our planet for future generations.
We have worked with the World Land Trust since 2007, offsetting our emissions every year since then by donating to their Carbon Balanced programme to preserve and restore some of the world’s most threatened habitats via land purchase. Our donations (carbon credits) have contributed to the protection and expansion of the Guanacas Reserve, a hugely biodiverse area of cloud forest in the mountains of Colombia’s Antioquia region, and the Chocó Forest reserve in Ecuador, which is home to species including Great Green Macaws, Banded Ground Cuckoos, Jaguars, and Spider, Howler and Capuchin Monkeys.
We have been a member of the European Outdoor Conservation Association since it was founded in 2006, helping to raise funds for grassroots conservation projects that give back to nature. A group of businesses in the European outdoor industry, the association raises funds for projects that mitigate against climate change and tackle our world’s loss of biodiversity, as well as connecting people and communities to nature to build meaningful legacies. Projects have included establishing an environmental trail in Nepal, clean-up operations on a mountain peak in Kyrgyzstan, the protection of brown bears in the Cantabrian mountains of northern Spain, and replanting native ‘virgin’ forest in the Czech Republic.
We are also committed to donating 1% of our annual turnover, each year, to ecological and social causes, which are intrinsically linked and where we know we can have an impact.
