Why breathability depends upon water repellency...
Breathable waterproof garments are most likely to get sweaty and wet inside when used in damp or wet conditions. If the outer fabric absorbs water, the garment can lose up to 70% of its breathability. Therefore, the Durable Water Repellency (DWR) on the outer fabric of your softshell jacket must be maintained to ensure comfort. Nikwax Tech Wash® will revitalise the DWR and therefore breathability of your garment, while Nikwax SoftShell Proof™ will renew the DWR when it eventually wears off.

Use Nikwax Tech Wash® and SoftShell Proof™ when your softshell garments soak up water...
Your softshell garment could be soaking up water just because it is dirty. First, try cleaning it with Nikwax Tech Wash®, and if it is fairly new, or recently re-waterproofed, the Durable Water Repellency (DWR) will be revitalised just from cleaning. But, once the garment has been thoroughly worn, you will need to add DWR, using Nikwax SoftShell Proof™, after cleaning first with Nikwax Tech Wash®.

- Alternative waterproofing products are often solvent-based aerosols; alternatively, they may be water-based and use fluorocarbons. Aerosol products are flammable. Fluorocarbons pose a potential risk to the environment and to the long-term health of the consumer.Nikwax SoftShell Proof™ is a safe product to use on softshell fabrics. It is WaterBased, non-flammable, contains no harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and is fluorocarbon free. Nikwax SoftShell Proof™ has been specifically designed and optimised for softshell clothing, providing Durable Water Repellency (DWR) whilst maintaining breathability. Nikwax SoftShell Proof requires no heat to develop its DWR, so it is not necessary to use a tumble drier for best results.

- Regular cleaning will enhance the performance of your gear. With regular cleaning, you should be able to clean your gear 5-6 times with Nikwax Tech Wash before it requires re-waterproofing. When Nikwax Tech Wash® alone does not revitalise the Durable Water Repellency (DWR) of your gear (e.g. water does not bead on the fabric surface) it’s time to re-waterproof using the Nikwax SoftShell Proof™ Wash-in.

Also, as the need for tumble drying is removed, this saves energy and protects more vulnerable, older, garments from heat. Use Nikwax Tech Wash® and SoftShell Proof™ in a washing machine...
Nikwax Tech Wash®:
Use neat Tech Wash® and a sponge, or soft nylon brush, to treat stubborn stains before washing. Remove all non-washable parts. Shake well before use. Follow care label instructions. Do not use detergents.
- Remove all detergent build up from the detergent dispenser.
- Place item(s) in washing machine (maximum 2 items).
- Use 150ml in medium/hard water* areas and 100ml in soft water areas for 1-2 items.
- Wash according to care label.
Nikwax SoftShell Proof™:
For best results remove all non-washable parts and always clean item(s) first with Nikwax Tech Wash® in a separate wash cycle. No need to dry item(s) before waterproofing.
- Remove all detergent build up from the detergent dispenser.
- Place maximum of 2 clean garments in washing machine.
- Use 100ml per garment.
- Run 30°C synthetic cycle and slow spin.
To maintain waterproofing always wash with Nikwax Tech Wash®. Do not use detergents.

- Nikwax Tech Wash®:Use gloves.
- Immerse item(s) in 6L hand-hot water in sink or bowl.
- Use 150ml in medium/hard water* areas and 100ml in soft water areas for 1-2 items.
- Rinse 3 times in clean water.
- If your kettle furs up you have hard water. For extreme hard water use 200ml.
Nikwax SoftShell Proof™:
Use gloves (to avoid waterproofing your hands!).
- Immerse 1 clean garment in 6L of hand-hot water in a bowl or sink.
- Add 100ml of SoftShell Proof™.
- Agitate to mix, leave to soak for 5-10 minutes, then agitate thoroughly.
- Rinse with cold water until water runs clear.
- Nikwax treated clothing doesn’t need to be dried before you re-waterproof…
- If the item doesn’t require re-waterproofing, air dry or tumble dry on a low setting if care label allows.Nikwax SoftShell Proof™ treated clothing needs no heat to develop Durable Water Repellency (DWR).Air dry or tumble dry on a low setting if care label allows.
