For occasional use, such as short walks or light showers, a lighter garment offers plenty of protection and breathability. But if you’ll be outdoors for long periods in persistent rain or carrying a heavy pack, a more protective design with greater directional waterproof performance will keep you drier and more comfortable.

For light use, such as a jacket to throw on during chilly mornings, a lower insulation rating is usually sufficient. However, if you’ll be spending long days in freezing or exposed environments, a higher level of insulation will offer greater warmth and protection.
